Which method is more efficient for small kitchen tasks?
Microwaves are highly efficient because they excite water molecules directly. However, their power supplies and fans add overhead. Stoves lose heat to the air, the cookware, and the stovetop itself. Gas is often cheaper per unit of energy, but its efficiency is the lowest (~40%%) as most heat escapes around the pot.
The calculator uses the specific heat capacity of the target material (water: 1.163 Wh/kg·K, average meal: 0.85 Wh/kg·K) to determine the net energy needed.
We compare the time and financial cost of heating the same amount of food or water across different technologies.
