The Formula

Real Hourly Wage = (Total Compensation - Commute Costs) / (Working Hours + Commute Time)

This calculator treats your commute time as 'forced' work time. If you spend 10 hours a week in a car, you are effectively working those hours but getting paid 0 for them. We also subtract the literal out-of-pocket costs for fuel, wear and tear, or public transport tickets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Comparing jobs based only on the monthly net income is often misleading. A job that pays 200€ more but requires an extra hour of commuting every day might actually pay less per hour of your time. Our calculator gives you a neutral basis for making better career decisions.

You should include everything you pay out of pocket to get to work: fuel, parking, tolls, public transport tickets, or the proportional wear and tear on your car. If you work from home, this cost is zero, which significantly boosts your real wage.

Yes. If your job requires you to prep for 30 minutes at home every day or stay late unpaid, those are hours of your life dedicated to work. Including them in the calculation shows the true value of your time.

Remote work is often a hidden 'raise.' By eliminating both the time and the literal cost of the commute, your hourly rate can increase by 15-25%% even if the base salary stays the same.

Not necessarily. A higher salary in a high-cost city with a long commute might leave you with less 'disposable' time and money than a lower salary in a more affordable area with a short walk to work.

Detailed Methodology & Calculation Logic

Real Income Logic

The calculator identifies your actual earning power by subtracting the hidden costs of employment from your gross compensation.

  • Net Compensation: Calculated as (Base Salary + Monetary Benefits) - Annual Commute Costs.
  • Annual Work Days: Adjusted for vacation days and weekly work patterns (Standard: 52.14 weeks/year).
Effective Time Analysis

We determine the 'True Hourly Wage' by factoring in the total time investment required for the job.

  • Effective Hours: Actual Working Hours + Total Commute Time. This represents the real time 'stolen' from your day.
  • Real Wage Formula: Net Annual Compensation / Total Annual Effective Hours. This often reveals that lower-paying local jobs are more lucrative than high-paying ones with long commutes.
